Stephen Fry Offers ‘Win-Win Solution’ for the Parthenon Marbles
English actor, director, and writer Stephen Fry made an emotional and powerful appeal for the return of the Parthenon Marbles to Greece.
Fry who has been advocating for a long time for the return of the artifacts held at the British Museum expressed his belief that the reunification of the Parthenon Marbles in the Acropolis Museum will eventually become reality.
“I know it will happen. Let that time be now” he said in a recorded statement. “In the last few months, I have truly felt that there is a real chance of a solution that brings benefit, honor and pride to both Britain and Greece.
Fry who wields a considerable amount of influence through his use of Twitter, explained why the Parthenon Marbles saga is entering a new more hopeful stage after the British Museum conceded that a deal could be made with Greece.
Fry proposes a win-win solution for the Parthenon Marbles
“It’s about time we move on from two centuries of bitter but sterile legal wrangling. It’s time we put our energies to an exchange,” Fry said and explained that the exchange would involve the showcasing at the British Museum of rotating and never-seen-before in London Greek antiquities, whilst the Parthenon Marbles return to Greece.
“This would be a win-win for everyone. The British Museum continues to be a leading museum of the world, while the Parthenon sculptures are reunited in their birthplace.”
“I look forward to witnessing the joy and excitement of the Greek people…Visiting the Acropolis Museum and seeing this marvel in its totality as a whole piece of art.”
Fry with his latest intervention on the Parthenon Marbles joined John Oliver who earlier in September blasted the British Museum over its refusal to return the artifacts.
In his show Last Week Tonight with John Oliver he said: “The Marbles should absolutely be returned to Greece,” and added that the Parthenon antiquities are “the tip of the iceberg.”
Greece hopes for an agreement with Liz Truss on Parthenon Marbles
Greece will seek to strike an agreement with new British Prime Minister Liz Truss over the return of the Parthenon Marbles to Athens, PM Kyriakos Mitsotakis said in a recent interview with The Sunday Times.
“At a time when Truss will be looking to build her credibility and when the UK is sort of cornered in terms of its overall image after the [Queen’s] funeral, it will be a fantastic gesture, and that’s what I’ll tell her,” said Mitsotakis to The Times‘ Matthew Campbell.
The Prime Minister shared his belief that King Charles, with whom he purportedly has a good personal relationship, will have to remain neutral on the issue due to his position. However, King Charles is supportive of the initiative to re-unite the Parthenon Marbles.
