It’s time to discuss the repatriation of our looted artefacts
It’s hard to believe that 40 years ago some of our greatest museums were simply adjuncts of government departments. The V&A in all its swish fashion finery was simply an office of the dour Department of Education and Science. The same for the Science Museum, now an ambitious museum in London, Manchester and Bradford. The Royal Armouries was part of the Department of Environment, and Kew Gardens was just Maff — part of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food.
Margaret Thatcher, whose legacy resonates so strongly with our government, set them free. The 1983 National Heritage Act followed similar acts that had freed up other institutions, such as the British Museum. No longer would the clatter of the museum artefact need to be heard
